Pollution's impact on hair

With the increase in wildfires, you may want to be more diligent than usual with respect to the impact to your hair.  Hair is one of the most sensitive parts of our body as it has tiny pores that are easily clogged with dust and pollution particles.  Air pollution can damage your hair in a number of ways. It can dry it out, cause dandruff, and even lead to split ends. In addition to these effects on the physical appearance of your hair, air pollution may also contribute to hair loss by damaging cells in the follicles that produce new hairs.

What to do about it

If you are aware of any hair damage that may be caused by air pollution, then you should follow these tips:

  • Keep your hair clean. You may want to increase your usual schedule of shampooing.  Be sure to use a salon quality, sulfate free, paraben free shampoo. To avoid sulfates, try to find shampoos that are labeled as sulfate-free, but be careful. Just because something is labeled as sulfate-free doesn't mean it is. Truly sulfate-free shampoos are made from gentler plant extracts and use amino acids, seed oils like palm or coconut oil and offer many advantages over their chemically manufactured counterparts.
  • Keep your hair conditioned. Well-conditioned hair will leave less porosity available for the pollutants to enter the hair strand.
